zeewool, I emailed you yesterday. I guess your email is not working yet. Here's my email I sent you: I received the notes yesterday & I'm blown away! Ecstatic! Thank you so much! They're beauties!

Thought I had a mismatch here. Just found out it's a fake. Guess I should invest in an error book next time I buy errors, I'm not too familiar with them. Is there only certain series that have mismatches or can it occur in any series/denomination?

I see how it could be fake by turing the 3 into an 8, but was there something else that let you know it was fake?

Yes I sold it on ebay, just met with the buyer who collects mismatches. He pointed out to me when you look closely, that someone went over entire serial number with a marker. Theres dots where the marker stopped and the "1" on the left side SN almost appears to be an "I".

I thought maybe to have it graded but he said it isn't worth it. I think he said he has 70 some mis-matched numbers in his collection so I'll listen to his advice. I gave him the link to this site, hopefully he'll sign up and post some notes from his collection.

bvalania you have to stop being so trusting. That note reeks of foul play.

Yeah I can see that now once someone pointed it out to me. I was originally excited when I bought a lot of errors from the same dealer thinking I was getting a good price. But you know what they say, "if it sounds to good to be true..."

Nickelman, I see it "after the fact". What is the give away that you see in the altered SN? Thanks

In the first two seconds of looking at that note my thought was "looks like someone drew the serial on with a Sharpie".

My first impression as well, the numbers look thick and sloppy

my opinion as an offset press operator in commercial printing for way too many years is: that last $20 looks more like the press missed a sheet, it still went on impression, and this was one of the first sheets fed through afterwards- it's printed from the back cylinder it would have taken at least 10 sheets if not more for the ink for fade away.. it's too clean, sharp and even for regular offset during stacking or cutting - would be more splotchy looking and broken on another "note" the other possibility would be to wet another $20 with a chemical that would "free" the ink, and use something with major pressure to offset the ink onto this one... there again, too clean and sharp, I would expect to see smudged ink flow in that case... maybe something I could experiment with at work i go back in tuesday night... if I can find the time, i'll see what I can come up with and let you know when I have the net turned on in my new place sometime later in the week
