The 2006 P is supposed to be plated steel, so magnetic. The 2006 RCM logo could be either. A magnetic no mint mark, or a non-magnetic P, would be a production screw-up. Report this Post to the Staff

The Canada coins info section does a good job explaining the variations. Of course steel is magnetic while zinc is not. *Minted Varieties* 2006 (no P composition mark) Cu plated zinc 866 Million 2006 P (magnetic) Cu plated steel 233,000 made 2006 RCM logo Cu plated zinc 176 Million 2006 RCM logo Cu plated steel 137 Million *Mint Error Varieties* 2006 (no P) Cu plated steel unknown qty made rare? 2006 P Cu plated zinc unknown qty made rare? But seriously 233,000 makes that coin rather rare. But I got the impression that up in Canada with the exception of silver in change the average person doesn't know anything about the coins except you got Loonies and Toonies now. Here is my question... without having the coin in front of you with a magnet in hand, is there a way to visually tell from photos if one of these 2006 varieties is zinc or steel?
