Have to agree with Condor- the mint makes them because they make a lot of money from them, plus the money they make from the mint sets too.
Am I correct that the mintage figure for 2002-present halves is only for the ones NOT in mint sets and the ones in mint sets are yet ADDITIONAL halves for the same year?

Sometimes you can go through a whole box worth of halves and not find a single MS coin or silver piece. But sometimes you'll get that lucky box that has the motherload. I got four boxes coming this week, hopefully my luck improves cause I don't enjoy going through 2000 coins for 1 40%

Halves get used quite a bit in the casino industry here in Nevada. I know they get used on the blackjack tables since a blackjack pays 1.5 times.

...and they're fun to search thru for silver.

I don't why they don't circulate now, as AG-G Barber and Walking Lib halves attest. I guess America goes thru periods of non-circulating halves and we are in one now. Perhaps if the U.S. got rid of the dead presidents, 50c and the $1 might circulate more. That and getting rid of the dollar bill.

I have given this theory at least once or twice before, but I will give it again... People knew that the mint left silver in the Half Dollar (while everything else went clad in 1965). With silver still inching higher, a lot of people hoarded them. It has also been said that the coins were being hoarded by fans of the extremely popular president. The shortage of halves meant the citizenry had to use two quarters, a concept that still works well today.

I'm surprised that anyone would be annoyed by receiving a half in change. I routinely spend halves by the roll, and virtually never receive any complaints.
Besides, any major change to the half could severely dent the chances of roll hunters finding halves in circulation.

I spend them every chance I get. I would rather put them back in circulation then have them sit in a bank vault and disappoint some poor roll searcher. Almost all of us here have felt that feeling before.

FOR THE SAKE OF CRHers! lol! But seriously, its kinda neat, that since everybody kinda forgot about em, or cashes in their collections of halves, its like a vault of silver unknown to most people except CRHers! I mean, seriously. Even Bens and Walkers aren't that rare when you crh, and what other denomination can you easily find 3 generations of designs with out looking through gazillions of dollars? just sayin!
