  I found this 1915 penny in some old coins that I have had for morethan 30yrs. I'm not sure if the metal is silver but looks to be. The coin is definitely not plated as it has some scratches and the worn areas that are silver in color. Any info on it's origin or value would be appreciated. The coin weights 5.64 grams and measures 25-26mm.

The weight is pretty much what they should be for a regular copper/tin/zinc cent.
Interesting. I won't ask you to scratch the rim to expose some fresh metal but others may!

When I was a little boy, I used to make coins look like this by rubbing them with (liquid) mercury. I am 95% sure that that is what happened to this coin.

I just find it really weird and quite a coincidence that "jttrading" got a coin that "Steve" had once rubbed with mercury!
Thats just eerie to have this message boards posters worlds collide again!

Will the "Peanuts" coin from the mint ever be a thing to collect?

Not ready to start cutting or filing yet. Steve I have heard of the mercury "Pass a penny for a quarter" but I thought it left a high glossy finish on the coin.
Can anyone tell the the difference in weight between the penny and the quarter?

Mercury was fun to play with.. my uncle had about a gallon of it LOL - when I was a kid he would spoon out some, we'd sit around pushing it back and forth on his dinner table, then he'd put it up- wipe the spoon on his shirt and toss it back in the silverware drawer.. i'd go home break all the thermometers in the house.. that never went over well- now finding out how hazardous it is.. it's a wonder I'm only a little drain bamaged  i have seen mercury used in prospecting to get every bit of gold dust possible, and that always looked a dull silver, never shiny- I haven't seen it done to a coin |
