Use a large weight on the hook for extra stability... I find I don't need it but my camera is a lot smaller and lighter than yours. As SuperDave mentioned also use the delayed shutter as pushing the button will cause a small amount of movement that will show on Macro shots..

Can someone tell me what the name is of the horizontal rod that extends from the tripod out to the camera? I don't guess that it comes with the tripod but I will need it I assume I will need it if I am shooting straight down. Thanks

You don't need it the Top of the tripod has a locking swivel that will allow you to tilt the camera from horizontal to vertical.
