Snooba - Firstly welcome & enjoy your stay ! Now as for your question... Depend on what you payed but YES I would keep them, both of the coins you ask about sold out very quickly and if you do a search on e Bay you'll see the now sell for between $30 - $40 AUS the pair, which if I remember issue was $4.95? I think, so not a bad profit for still a current year coin!

Hi Madbudgie0, Thanks for replying. I can't remember if I paid $4.75 or $4.95 when I bought them, but it was around that figure. Can you explain to me why these coins are worth so much and others do not increase in value? Is it simply that less of these coins were made? I probably sound like a bit of a dummy, but I really don't understand. Thank you for your help.

keep a few of them and sell the ones surplus to your needs and use the profit to buy coins you do not have , with decimal coins sometimes they are worth the most when demand is high which is now , because in a few years when the price settles you might only get $20 for the pair instead of the $30 to $40 they are now worth on ebay

. Firstly don't feel like a dummy that's what were here for, to help each other learn. "The only silly question is the one you never ask"!As to why they are worth so much... That's anyone opinion, I find there's rarely ever rhyme or reason to this. But I had been told that it was a low mintage because historically Queen's memorabilia sold slowly. Now as for selling out quickly and defining this trend... Again this was only conjecture... Firstly a low mintage with the Queen now aging possibly a reason, sort of get in while you can so to speak, (no malleolus intended) & secondly we did have the Commonwealth games out here early this year so we had plenty of overseas visitors to take a slice of OZ home with them (must have been all British folk). And I can say I personally like the coins design which alway's helps with sales. Now also as a bit of extra info that you may or may not know, have a look... In both coin types you can find a "soft strike" on the obverse of the coins, it's very noticeable, and I have one of each put away. Also there is currently a private issued PNC on the market using the Queen's Birthday 50c and this venture took 2000 of this coin out of normal circulation! And lastly PNC king makes a good point, if you need the money or wish to capitalize on it's current popularity sell of a few in case the price does settle as I also think it will, but still keep a few in case it keeps going.

Thank you Madbudgie0 and PNC King, I really appreciate your answers. And I agree with you Madbudgie0, I like the coins design as well, (which is why I went a bit crazy buying them) I think they are two of the most attractive Australian coins that I have ever seen. Thank you.

Sorry, but I am not sure exactly what a "private issue" means. Is it not released from the mint? Who does release a private issue? Can you please tell me? Thanks.

Basically they are not released by either the mint nor Aussie post by rather by a person / company, privately , sometimes call "Unofficial", and this one is actually sold by one of own... Bigfella, a very well done PNC but still Unofficial or Privately issue. A good example and probably the best known of Unofficial / Private issued PNC's was the 1969 specimen 50c (Macca's page 128).

Welocme to the CC family Snooba.
Have a great stay here with us.
I know of a number of collectors who missed purchasing one of them. So you would have no trouble getting top dollar for them if you sold them.
However I would hang on to them as they will be worth more in the future.

To me they are at least a $100 coin. If you look at coins such as the 2002 50c PNC where mintage was 30000 (from memory with having my Maccas handy) and they are pushing $200 now. Thee have a mintage of 15000 each and as mentioned eaqrlier in this tread there are 2 varieties. There are also a few PNC's (unofficial and official) and coin and stamp packs etc which also make the number of carded issues less. In short if you do not need the $$$$ hang onto them till they reach their potential.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I think I will hang on to them. Once my son is older he can decide to sell or keep them - they will make a good gift for him.

I'm going to cry in my beer. I found 4 of these Royal visit coins in a post office and didn't realise they were so scarce. I sent them to other members of this forum as trades. When I went back to get another one for myself, I was unlucky. sob sob At least they have good homes. Steve

Hi Triggersmob, I hope this doesn't cause you to cry in your beer more! When I was in the post office back when they were selling them, the man ahead of me bought four of the stamp booklets with the royal visit 50c coins, and when I mentioned to him that my son collects coins, he cut the back page out of all four booklets and gave the coins to me. He said he only collects stamps so had no interest in the coins at all. So we now have four of the 50c Royal Visit in one of the pages of our coin album. They are fantastic coins!
