How do you tell it's PMD and not a die clash?

My guess would be that the "intruding" characters are incuse on the coin, meaning they were raised on whatever it came from.

If it were a die clash, it would be slightly raised on the coin, because the design is incuse on the die.

Thr first clue if that that the devices on the highest point of the coin are affected. On a die clash the devices for the deeper part (highest point on a coin) remain untouched during a clash. The dies fields are usually all that are touched during a clash. The devices from the opposite die transfer the edges of the devices to the fields. there are cases where a deep clash can affect the mid die devices, but very rare. I'll post some image to help with this:
Simulation of a die:

The area where the tallest devices on a coin are the deepest devices on the die. When a clash happens only the fields usually touch.
On a clashed coin note only the areas on the fields are affected and not the deeper devices:

Now compare these images to a coin that was squeezed between two others in a vise:

See how the higher devices on the coin press against each other. A sure sign of Post Mint Damage.
I mentioned a rare case where mid devices could be affected:

Hope this helps.
