What does it mean?. I have been watching an error coin on the bay and it was at $10.00 for a few days and no one was bidding on it so I contacted the seller and said I would offer $8 including shipping if it went unsold. As soon as I logged out of the bay there was a bid on it,go figure.Anyway, the seller got back to me and said she couldn't do that because of the bay rules I guess and said I should place my offer on the bay as a "proxy bid". So what is that and how do I place a bid like that? Thanks,
John1

She's just trying to get you to put a bid for the $10 I think. Proxy means it bids automatically I think. Like if you open a $10 auction with a $20 bid, The bid shows as $20 and will only increase as others bid. If someone bids $14, than your bid increases to whatever the bid increment is(50 cents or $1?). This will continue until someone surpasses your $20 maximum or you increase your bid, or no one else outbids you and you win the item. Hope that made sense!

I'm with the seller on this I don't take private offers to buy once an item is listed on ebay. Neither the seller or Buyer have recourse if the deal goes bad. I get them all the time and yes it would save me ebay and PayPal fees but you are breaking ebay rules by doing so. When you place a Bid on an item ebay automatically bids for you just enough to win the item until your max bid is reached. So ebay is your proxy bidder.

mycrob hit the nail on the head... it is an auto bid. So you place your highest bid and let ebay bid for you.

I understand that but I was making an offer if the item "didn't sell". I now know what "proxy bid" means, thank you. The opening bid was $10+S/H and I wanted to "offer" $8 w/S&H so I couldn't place my bid because it was lower then the opening bid. Thanks all,
John1

that is outside ebay rules. Probably why the seller doesn't want to do that.

I have made offers to sellers all the time,
and some have been accepted.

If you have a lot of transactions and 100% positive feedback a lot of sellers will trust you.
