vermontensium Moderator United States 16679 Posts	Posted 09/10/2010 5:22 pm It's been a while since I posted this coin. I'd like some fresh perspectives on it. It appears to have areas of white on the obverse,reverse,and rim. I am at a pause as to what this may be. At first, I thought it could be improper alloy but upon closer examination, this does not appear to be the case. Well, here it is. There's something about the appearance that reminds me of a chemical process. Some chemical reactions remove one metal and make others more visible on the surface. If copper where removed, the surface might look more silvery due to tin/zinc? Report this Post to the Staff

What causes you to think this now? If improper alloy is 'not' the case, then it is superficial discoloration, in which case, what would it matter what the cause was? A common date in circulated condition, I might take an X-acto knife to the edge to see what color the coin metal really is. Report this Post to the Staff
