I would have to agree, a few scattered but visible scuffs on the obverse and and a couple of dings in the field on the reverse. Nice coin, MS-64.

I think this just makes it to 65. The luster seems perfectly undisturbed with only minimal bag marks and the strike is juuuuuuuust about full. I think a little strike weakness is allowed for the O's in 65 IMO. Please correct me if I'm wrong or misguided
So 64+ for sure, 65 probable. Awesome coin

Thanks for the photograph comment, Matt. The technique I used is what I call Indirect Axial Lighting. This is pretty much the first time I tried it and I also like how it lights up the coin with a single light source.

I think this coin is an "easy" 64 all day long, but I suppose (based on ShadowCreator's comments) it's possible that a grader might be a having a good day and call this a 5. The mark above the eagle might hurt that possibility, though. I do agree that the strike is very nice for this, only missing some detail in the eagle's breast.

Are you sure that the dings on the back wouldn't kill it from going into a 5 holder?

ya they do look a little deep don't they... From what I understand the rev. on morgans doesn't play a huge role in assigned grade, so I think it could get it. But if its a borderline coin, it will usually pick up the lower grade. If you want the slabbed 65 though, I say its worth the risk. I'll pay you back if it comes back 64  . ALSO: I have been studying coins for less than a year. So don't just take my word for it |

This coin has a good shot at 65. If it were a 64, then it would be a very strong 64. It compares very favorably with my 1898-O that's for sale. https://goccf.com/t/72059 P.S. You fooled me on your Jeff Nickel. Is this another trick?  |

I believe this coin, while the New Orleans Mint is known for their "weak" strikes, would grade a 64+, I also believe the grade could become a 65 if the right grader was doing the grading, I really do not like the weak breast feathers on the coin, if you check out the 1898-O Morgan Brad has for sale, and just so happens to be graded a MS65 in a PCGS slab, I believe the reverse on Brads coin the breast feathers especially, are from a better and more pronounced die, Obverse included than the OP'S coin, IMO, a stronger crisper new die from the same mint,struck with the same pressure makes a big difference....Just my opinion...
