I am contemplating sending in my 14-D to ANACS (Any combination of ten or more U.S. Dollars or Small Cents Special) along with some others, but I am torn on the grade to insure it for (Maximum insured value of $500 per coin). Numismedia states the following values for the 14-D;

VF-20 $396
XF-40 $920

I am seeking opinions on the grade/value to submit.

Thanks for your consideration!

I'd insure it for $400. From your pictures, your coin does not look XF40, the best I see it grading is VF30 and then the value would be around $500.

I would agree that it's certainly not XF-40. Beyond that, I would probably say VF-25.

I'd insure it at VF-30 money, just in case. Off these pics, I see it as a VF-25.

I agree with the above. It doesn't make XF40.

I think it is a very nice looking VF30! Excellent eye appeal!

Thanks for the feedback, I did not think that it would warrant XF-40, but it appears better than VF-20, so I was not too far off. Follow up question, there is a little crud within the 9 and 4 of the date, the lettering on the obverse, and underneath the bust. Should I attempt to clean it up? If so, how? I am afraid of messing it up, or should I just send it in "as-is"?

Thanks again, you guys and gals are great, as usual!

Here's my answer. Let's just say a picture is worth a thousand words. Look at the dirt on the date and elsewhere on this one. This one wasn't submitted, but were I to submit it, I think I'd submit it as is.

Send it in "as is". I would not attempt anything with a high value key date such as your coin.

Concur don't attempt to clean it up. Coin is a easy VF-30. It looks VF "As is" don't do anything to it besides getting it slabbed.
