Hey all, I haven't dealt with too many circulated Morgans, so I am turning to your expertise. This coin is one that I bought in 2000 (I was fifteen!) for $237. I liked it because a) I did not have any "key date" coins at the time and b) I liked the contrast between the dark fields and the lighter bust (like a circulated cameo if that makes sense to anyone). I am guessing it should be at least a G(06), but am hoping it may be even higher! I'd love to know what everyone else thinks.   |

I would grade this coin at VG-8.

G-8 is really VG8 I think. Anyhow, I think this is a a VG coin

That should be in plastic... way too rare not to be. Looks like a VAM-2A. Very Nice.

I think it just might BARELY get to VG 10. On the other hand, if you sent it in, it would more than likely catch an 8. From what I understand, TPGs will generally take the low end if there is a borderline like this. I made an interesting finding when I was researching and comparing your coin to others. I found that when you bought the coin, it was a G 6. And now its a VG 8/10. I compared photos of what PCGS called G 6 in 1997 (PCGS Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, 1st Edition) to what they call G 6 now (PCGS Photograde Online) and they are very different. The G 6 in 1997 looks exactly like a VG 8/10 now. And the G 6 now looks so close to what was AG 3 then. Only difference is that the AG has blended rims and the G 6 doesn't. I'm really interested in this so I will probably post a new topic if I find any other supporting evidence of such a difference. ANYWAY, nice VG 8/10 you have there  |

Zee your coin has a little bit more detail than Adams, I would grade it at VG-10.

This example poses a dilemma to both collectors and sellers alike. It's right on the cusp of F, conservative grading would be VG+, liberal grading would be F. I've seen this condition sold either way.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I would like to submit this one and get it slabbed. Is there a way of doing that other than paying to join PCGS then paying again for them to grade/slab it?
Remmy: thanks for the advice. It lives in plastic silver dollar holder and came out briefly so I could photograph it with the edges more visible.
Zeewool: I like yours! I like the coloring and the smooth, even wear.
Mattbrowning: I also consulted photograde on PCGS, and was a little surprised by the standards. I'm glad it's not just me that thinks they may be a little different now. I would love to read you post more about this!

I'd grade the OP's coin VG10. The second one posted looks F12 to me.
