I finally scored a coin with a W!! Hurrah. a $2 1998 Twoonie minted in Winnipeg! Just had to share my little score. No pics yet, sorry. Also a 1996 Twoonie, both coins have the cores slightly off center with the core overlapping the rims a little bit, the '96 core is more off at about 1/16th off center and center core overlaps past the center rim a bit.
I don't know if these coins have any premiums but I'm hanging onto them for now and will try not to have to spend them too soon :)

I got one too. Man, it was a hard find! Lots of nicks on mine since it was in circulation, but otherwise lustrous and "proof-y".

Yes, those Winnipeg minted coins are pretty scarce as far as I can tell. I've RARELY seen one in all these years! Glad you caught one. Mine has a lot of wear on it too.

Can you show a picture...I'm curious where that W is located on the coin.
Cheers

I looked for a photo example online but couldn't find one. I can't upload photos currently with my computer issues, sorry! but on my 1998 there is a small W on the obverse in front of the base of the Queens neck, close to the rim. Maybe someone else has a sample photo image to post? or a link to one ...

Are these coins that were originally in proof sets? or were they business strikes for circulation? I've seen one if they are the same as the proof set ones.

Sorry I don't yet know if these W coins were for circulation or sets. I'm still pretty new to learning here. I'll google some tomorrow and post what I learn, after I sleep as I'm ready to drop right now (its almost 2 a.m.) and I didn't sleep much night before. Catch you tomorrow ;)

As far as I know the "W" coins were in sets only.

Thanks Redlock, and Castor for posting the image! Thats where my W is on mine too.
So PL means Proof Like. My coin is magnetic (both are) as well, and my W coin more shiney & lustery looking too,, than other twoonies.
I'm actually not sure whether to call them TWOonies, or TOOnies. Anyone know the correct spelling to use. I see both spellings used dependent on who is naming them.

Thanks for the info link TwoCentsWorth. Yes, its looking like the official spelling is TOONIE and that the RCM even copyrighted or got a patent on it and the spelling, or something like that. I googled a bit. Plus the official news always refers to it as "Toonie" as far as I've seen ... so from now on I will stick to spelling it TOONIE!

sorry, I thought it was twoonies was the right spelling because you get way more results then toonies when entered in the ebay search engine.

It gets pretty confusing, doesn't it, with nicknames. Officially its Toonie then, and unofficially its nickname or slang is Twoonie I guess. Easy to confuse the "two" and "too" when relating it to a $2 dollar coin. Makes more sense to spell it Two, to me, and Loon (Loonie) refers to the Loon!! Go figure hey?
