Oh wow. The "Moonie" (because of the Queen's bear behind" is hilariuos, and somehow I can see it as inappropriate and undignified for our Queen Elizabeth  Its interesting to have read that wiki info as I didn't realize that the Bear was also named as well "Churchill" (as in Churchill, Manitoba where there are a lot of polar bear, and as in Winston Churchill) Interesting tidbits. |

Sorry cazzuey WIKIPEDIA is in error. I often go there to do research for projects I work on,(which has to be 100% accurate/correct),and quite often find them in error.  Don't believe everything you read/see on the web! |

I tend to cross reference lots of sources for info. And thats so true about Wiki often listing wrong info, that people think is correct maybe when they add the info, but are incorrect. Cross checking many sources of info is a good general idea when getting info off the net I think That sure proves true for medical info! People get led down the wrong paths.
I still use wiki a LOT though. Its a great resource.

I learned to cross reference when doing family geneology searching and medical info searching, but yeah, good idea in general when looking for info when you need facts and specifics |

They should have called it the "doubloon", not the twoonie (IMO).

I was going to say the same thing.
Doubloon was a nice historical gag as well as being a double loon.
Twonie makes sense. I can't figure out why it is toonie.

Scanned my two Toonies. The W one looks awful, well, they both do scanned, but they're all I can do. Thw W one has a lot of scritchy-scratchy wear on it. Its actually very yellow gold looking and shiney. The inner gold coloured center is slightly off struck and overlaps its rim a little bit. The 1996 is interesting as its on one of those one-piece prefab German planchets I think (not hollow) with more of an off center middle overlapping the ridge on the reverse. You can see its one piece as the center design shows where the gap would be were the coin two pieced right above 2 DOLLARS. You can also see more of a rim split showing more signs of struck a bit off centered. The center is the more bronzy flatter matte center. The coins look better in real time than scanned ;)      Scans Edited by Dottir

The 1998 W toonie and the 2000 W toonie were only available in PL sets with less than 200,000 of each minted. Apparently alot of sets have been broken up to see them in circulation. Always a nice find when its something never intended for circulation :)

This is my take on the whole coin naming thing. If we refer to the dollar coin as a Loonie because of the loon on the coin, then we should be calling the two dollar coin a Bearie since it commonly has bears on it
