After two years of learning from the wonderful experts on this fine forum

...... I am at last prepared with sufficient knowledge and enthusiasm to embark on collecting my first ever Classic US coin set -
Liberty nickels.
Should not be a surprise that I chose nickels

I will note for the record that I am also building a MS collection of Type ‘Classic' US Silver Commemorative .....and having collected 38 of the 50 coins so far I am well on my way with this goal ....... but that set was never intended for daily commerce like the 33 coin
Liberty nickel set.
Soooo ..... having some reasonable maturity as a 2-year experienced collector (mostly from reading all of your wisdom) ... I have decided upon the following tenants to guide my new collection ...
Tenant #1: All coins will grade from XF40 to AU55. I have learned how to accurately grade this series and have no problem purchasing raw coins.
Tenant #2: All coins will have original surfaces. No cleaned coins or dipping allowed.
Tenant #3: All coins will be reasonably well struck ..... not interested in weak details in an AU50 coin.
Tenant #4: The visual appearance of the set will be consistent ..... so I need to be careful to avoid too much luster on AU55 coins and too little life on XF40 coins. I want the overall look of the set to be visually pleasing with nothing ‘standing out' ....... this will be the tough putt indeed! Coins that fit my need will have a pleasing uniform ‘gunmetal grey' surface look to them ...... that's what I am after.
So that is the goal. Perhaps a very difficult one indeed .....
I have set myself up for a true challenge given the lack of Liberty in high circulated state ....... They are easy to find in the marketplace in worn (G4 to F12) and MS State. They are hard to find in the circulated range I seek which makes this quest all the more fun and challenging.
To get a good start on the set I've visited my 3 local brick-and-mortar dealers and have in my hands a Dansco 7111 with 5 coins so far that meet my criteria.
I'll keep you posted as I move along with the set ...... although it might be many years before all the coins show up that met my needs.
Any advice, input or suggestions for sources of
Liberty nickels would be valued and appreciated.
I'm looking forward to the fun of sharing with all of you as I work on this new collection!
