Spots On Proof Three Cent Nickels - Coin Community Forum

Adam590 Pillar of the Community United States 758 Posts	Posted 10/25/2010 6:41 pm I have an 1878 3CN in a PCGS Original Green Holder certified as PR(64). This coin, although not marked for cameo, has some nice cameo like qualities; however, there are also some spots, specifically a larger one on the reverse. Are spots common on these proof 3CN's? So here is my question: Is this coin best off staying in its original green holder as it is, or are there ways (I would never do these myself) to get spots removed without compromising the coin's originality? I would be very nervous about interfering with this coin in any way, there is a chance it could end in tears. I think the original PCGS holder with certification is OK. If you take it out, it would need to be re certified or maybe sent back to PCGS. I feel sure that they would charge an additional fee, plus you have additional secure postage costs. You would be spending quite a few $$ to have it professionally conserved (the only way to get the flyspecks off), plus shipping and re-grading costs.
