Here is the back story for this find. My Friend Robert scored over $4000 in BU Bank and Mint rolls of State Quarters from a bank teller who informed him about the collection. There are both P and D mint marks. Well living in the west it is difficult to get P mint quarters here in my area. I was able to purchase 36 rolls of P mint mark State Quarters. This quarter came from a US Mint Roll. I Believe this is a strike through error on the reverse Northwest side of the coin. This coin also has some unusual toning, could it be possibly also be an improperly annealed coin as well?

I should have been more disciplined before I posted this quarter. Taking a closer look at it. I just rubbed a toothpick over the area and it felt smooth. I didn't even think about it being a stain. It looks similar to a strike through I have found before. OOPS ! I just tossed it into some acetone and the stain is still there. Again it does smooth. So being from a mint roll what is going on with this coin. It was in the middle of the roll so toning didn't happen because it was on the end of a roll. No color change after the acetone wash.

I am sure the stain is permanent. Regardless, a lesson learned.

I just completed a $500 box of quarters, because my bank "ran out of cash" and had to give me the withdraw in quarters and $1 & $2 bills. I hope this is an isolated incident of running out of cash!
Anyhow, the box had just 2 keepers: 1 W 2019 quarter (AU) and 1 1981-S Proof. There were a few BU Bicentennial quarters and a couple of nicer mid-60s. There were no silver or varieties.
As I was going through this, I was also trying to put together a mini set from 2016-2021 P & D, BU specimens only, to try to get myself caught up on the moderns. I got about 85% of it completed (need 7 coins). So many of these coins, not even 10 years old, were just not in good enough condition to plug the holes. I was surprised I could not complete this short set with one box of quarters. Many coins have those circular scratches from being machine rolled. I think there are 54 different quarters needed to complete this date range (only 4 different quarters in 2021).
I probably will not do another box of quarters for a long time, as they are pretty boring. I think the US Mint is making far too many designs and it is overwhelming trying to collect these quarters.

Finding a W mint is pretty good, mycrob.
I agree with you on too many varieties. But the Mint just keeps on putting them out. Gear up for four years of Youth Sports Quarters starting in 2027.

Roll (or even just change) searching is just no longer in my blood. But I will always admire those here that still put forth the effort! Keep searching, keep sharing!

My last twelve boxes contained:
Box 1 (Brinks): nothing Box 2 (Brinks): nothing Box 3 (Brinks): 1 2020-W Weir Farm Box 4 (bag): nothing Box 5 (bag): nothing Box 6 (CWR): nothing Box 7 (Titan): nothing Box 8 (Brinks): nothing Box 9 (Titan): 2 2020-W Marsh Billings Rockefeller Box 10 (Laundry): 2 2020-W Salt River Bay, 1 2020-W Marsh Billings Rockefeller Box 11 (Brinks): nothing Box 12 (Brinks): nothing
So one West Point mintmark every other box, which is about average for me in 2025. No silver, though. A little disappointing, but so it goes in quarter searching.

Still nice finds, TomM. Make sure you're also looking for varieties and errors as well, if you collect that kind of stuff.

The West Point quarters make it worth the effort.

Thanks, jbuck and Errers. I do look for major errors and have found a few nice ones.
But they have been few and far between - if it weren't for West Point mintmarks, I would probably ignore quarters. I hope the US Mint produces them again in the future. They were a big boost for the collecting community.

Found my very first silver quarter today! It was in a Loomis box, an ender to boot. Granted it was a last year 1964-P quarter, but I'll take it!
