Quote: I bet we see a lot more get posted, once we get to 1853. Now why would that be Moe....do you have an extraordinary amount of 1853 dated coins? I had hard time locating this thread.....strangely, my search key words like 'Moe's thread' and 'Moe's the man' didn't turn up any results. Great thread buddy, sorry I have nothing to contribute other than sarcasm.

No, you need to search for "Moe owes ME MONEY", and then you will find his name, address, personal phone number, and credit card information! (just kidding) Anyways, I too am waiting for 1853, and I have almost a complete seated type set from that year. The only early one I have is from 1843, and is now a missed opportunity.

Zeewool ..
I only have a couple 1853. My thinking as to why we will see more 1853's and above is.
If I have this right. The arrows were added in 1853 to show that the silver content was changed.
In the early 1850's silver prices had increased in value to the point the U.S. silver coins were worth more than face value. They were taken out of country in large numbers to be sold and melted.
I am thinking this has a lot to do with why we don't see a lot of pre 1853 coins.

Yes GoldRush, I am sure that you are 100% correct in your assessment of why there will probably be more 1853 coins than previous issues.....the price of silver always seems to be a player....I was just being silly... Those arrows and rays really add some class to the coins too....Compare to earlier coins with no arrows, no rays, and no stars....Here is a nice ugly example:
