SuperDave has created a super thread in his "28 Days of Morgans", and I will be posting some rather old photos of my own in the days to come. You see, I once owned 26 more Morgans and Peace dollars than I do now (currently, one of each), and to make a sorry story short, they were stolen, in a generic blue Whitman album, along with a handful of SBA's, some time in 1984 when I was living in Sun Valley, CA, on the east side of the San Fernando Valley. These silver dollars were ones taken out of circulation in northern Wyoming by my grandmother probably from the '40's through the '50's and presented to me a few years before she died. I'd love to get them back, and if by some miracle some or all of them survived together, I'd be happy to purchase them from the current holder, no questions asked. Some of the coins in better condition I photographed (probably with a Konica T, reverse adapter, onto b&W copy film [not Tri-X]) around 35 years ago with the idea that I'd use the photos for VAM identification. However, the photos turned out to be of rather poor quality, and I gave up the idea of discovering a new VAM or even an old one from the negatives (which I've now scanned and inverted to post here). I didn't discover the theft until probably months after the coins disappeared, and I did not make a police report. Considering the questionable friends of a short-term roommate with whom I shared a house at the time, I would guess that they went directly to a pawn shop and were never redeemed or were sold to a coin shop somewhere in the Valley or greater LA. At the time, I figured that they were gone for good and didn't try to track them down. However, if by any chance a CCF member recognizes a number of these stolen coins from the photos I'll be posting in SuperDave's thread, or even from the list below, as I stated above I'd be interested in purchasing the lot for a reasonable price; after some 26 years I have no interest in "justice being served" - only their return for sentimental reasons (and not the SBA's, lol; I have no sentimental feelings for SBA's and didn't keep a list of them as I did the silver dollars). PM me if you have any leads. Here's the list, with my subjective grade of the time, probably a bit low (judge for yourself from the photos). Note that the photos which will appear will not include the coins of lower grade: 1878-S (G) 1879-S (VF-20) 1880-S (VF-20) 1881-S (XF-40) 1882-S (XF-40) 1883-S (G) 1885 (VF-20) 1885-O (VF-20) 1887 (XF-40) 1889-S (VF-20) 1890 (VF-20) 1890-S (VF-20) 1891-S (VF-20) 1891-S (VF-20) 1891-S (VF-20) 1896 (VF-20) 1897-S (VF-20) 1898 (XF-40) 1898 (XF-40) 1898-D (G) 1900 (G) 1901 (G) 1921-D (VF) Peace 1922 (XF-40) 1923-S (VG-8) 1924-S (F-12) 1927-D (F-12) Edited by pls 12/14/2010 6:44 pm

A sorry story indeed. I hope the last 26 years has given you something in return for this loss.

Thanks, jbuck. Yes, I'm rich beyond measure in many, many ways, but the loss of these silver dollars, and the thought that they're still out there, somewhere, has stayed with me. I simply thought that CCF, with its wide-spread membership, would be the best venue to try to locate them and get them on their way back to me.

I see you have posted the 1879 in the Morgan thread.
I see no reason why you could not also post the images in this thread as well.
You should at least link to the Photobucket album that has them since it appears that you have all of them posted there already.

jbuck, I see no reason to overload the forum with duplicate posts and photos. Anyone who might have an idea about these would look at the list first and then maybe the images second, but as you can tell, the 1879 is not exactly a model of close-up photography, and the others aren't any better. It would be nice if someone ID'ed a coin from one of the photos, but I'm not holding my breath.
Unfortunately, Photobucket has the images pretty much jumbled in the album (which also contains other objects), so I'm just going to keep it simple and post the images in order in the Morgan thread. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

It won't overload the forum. Since the images are hosted off-site, no CCF bandwidth is used. Regardless, you need to keep this fresh! You can link to this thread each time you post in the other one, or add a link to this thread in your signature.

I would put the photos in one place like here but chances are they will look a little different now than they did then so doubt you will have any success at all looking for them since so much time has gone by now Quote: after some 26 years I have no interest in "justice being served" Since you didn't make a police report this couldn't happen. I would have made one even if I thought it happened awhile before that. You never know you may have found out the same day or day after they got gone and the police could have let all the pawn shops and coin dealers know they were looking for such items and if someone came in that also had been to your house, you would be pretty sure they were yours

In my case, however, I discovered that the coins were missing months after the people who most likely stole them had also been gone from the place (there was no break-in; it was an "inside" job). I worked with a guy who needed a place to stay for a week or so while he was splitting from his ex, and suddenly his son was a guest, and then the son's friends had access to the place (not to mention the roommate's workers ... etc.). Plus it happened before I lost quite a bit of faith in humanity and have yet to recover ... which left me suspicious of everything and anyone, which is how I should have been in the first place! So now I'm posting this info more as a warning to others to be more careful than I was than as a serious recovery effort.

Quote: ... you need to keep this fresh! So far you mods are doing a good job with that, lol! Thanks for your help and advice, btw. I'll try to keep this thread "bumped", and perhaps I need to post a link from the 28 Days of Morgans to here in case there's someone who may not have read both threads.

Unless these coins have some specific identifying mark I'd say the chance of locating any of them is pretty slim. Except for the 1901 they are all common dates and you can find hundreds of them in similar grades.
I had a similar experience many years ago when some lowlife friend of my brother made off with some proof sets, dates from 1955 to 1964. They were gifts from my father but I realize equivalent sets are readily available. Since you know exactly what was stolen maybe you can start to assemble a replacement set, sort a tribute to your grandmother. Just a thought.

I like the idea of a replacement set. They won't be the original coins but if the dates, condition, and mint marks are matched the set itself would still have the same "fingerprint".

Wow, good luck. It would be amazing if someone just had this actual book sitting in a safe somewhere and was able to get it back to you. I am rooting for you. On a side note, it is unfortunate that we all must learn lessons like this in such s painful way.

Both the 1885 and 1885-O that I posted on this page might possibly have some distinct marks that could identify them.
