I find this thread very very helpful.
Thank you everyone for contributing. I believe I am wiser for it. It's just so sad people take adavantage like that.

Everyone with stories like this should post them. And don't be afraid to mention who the crook is! ...that is the most important part.

Cheers

Joe Iorio/J&M has consistently been fair in the dealings I've seen and done with them. Every dealer is out to make money, but J&M proves you can do it in a way that's fair to both parties. Lots of other dealers are less honest, and certainly have less tact. I've run into quite a few "flea market" type operations that would be happy to pay pennies for silver out of a grannies purse.

I was digging around the junk silver bins and some binders at the local coin store on Saturday, and one guy came in with three Canadian silver dollars. The shop owner offered him $10 each for them, the guy accepted. Less than 20 minutes later another guy came in with a single silver dollar, and walked out with his $10 too.

Seems he's rather poor at calculating silver too. With the lousy economy, people are taking advantage of the situation. They're even set up in the malls around here. People have better luck with coin shops.

Of course there are sharks out there waiting for unsuspecting people. Some people inherit these coins and have nothing invested in them. So someone offers them 5 times face and they think, Gee, more than I walked in with. Since they didn't do their homework to determine value, they don't know they are getting ripped off.

HHB you mention George Manz in Regina, does he have a store front? I go to Regina frequently and go to Barries Coins. I also purchase a fair bit from Colonial Acres https://www.colonialacres.com nice coins usually much better priced than ebay.

I have also dealt with Colonial Acres coins of Ontario and J and M Coins of Vancouver many times and have been satisfied with their product, in fact when the wife and I drove across Canada with our fifth wheel trailer, I made it a point to stop and see the store. I am from B.C.

Guess what, they are back. I just received the local newspaper, and there is the article, Canadian Collectors Roadshow, with a picture of the Queen on the page. They will be at the Best Western Regency Inn & Conference Centre in Abbotsford, B.C. The show will be on Monday Jan 3 to Jan 8, and then Jan 12 to Jan 15. I will be taking a couple of old silver dollars to see what they are giving. I am looking forward to see what they give per silver dollar. I will let everyone know the outcome.

I actually get almost offended when people sell their junk silver at such low prices, like %20 of melt or worse in some cases. I am angry that they have been given so much and waste it all away. It's beyond neglect; it's just stupid.

By the way, helped a coworker earlier in 2010 with some coin values on items she knew nothing about. Dear old dad had done his kids a solid and left them with something close to $15k in silver. Good man. She told me she had gone to a gold and silver buyer with a 100 ounce Engelhard bar and was offered $1800 for it (at the time silver was at $23 an ounce). She was very glad she had refused the transaction and had talked to me later on about it :)

Much thanks for this thread!! It's a great "heads up" for us new collectors. Shows us what we should learn about before buying or selling. I know I sure appreciate hearing about which dealers and people are honest and fair with their customers, things you folks have learned through experience dealing with them. This is all so new to me and though I haven't really started purchasing or selling anything as yet (budget issues) I'm hoping to. I'm noticing a lot of coins are very affordable for small budgets and that makes me pretty happy!

I also just learned that people who don't have credit cards can actually buy prepaid credit cards (like Visa gift cards from their bank!!) that work for online and in store transactions. This is awesome as this means I can actually purchase things online now if I spot something! I am worried about buying online though, so many crooks and cheats it seems, mixed in with so many great sellers ;) Buyer beware. So much to learn, so little patience

Anyways, I thank you all for this helpful thread!

These clowns came to my local mall a couple years ago.

Flyers around tow " we pay $25 for 1925 nickels ".

People were lining up like sheeps to the slaughter.

Gives honest collectors a bad name.
