Hi,
I'm new here, but I have been reading the post on these forums for awhile now. Scooby is one of those people you see all the time on this board and he seems a good natured and knowledgeable person.
I too enjoy the thrill of "the hunt". Going out to Flea Markets, Pawn Shops, Antique Stores; and making "that find". Much more exciting than going to an online auction and "writing a check".
I joined this board because the people here seem to love coins as much or maybe more than I do. I was looking at another board where there seems to be a fair amount of knowledge; however, I noticed the terms "trash" and "junk" bandied about quite a bit. A light reading revealed that, in that group, if it wasn't a slabbed MS 65 or higher it was "junk".
It soon became apparent that if someone of moderate means and with a circulation set, that might have taken decades to assemble, had joined that group; that they would have been met with ridicule or silence.
I recently had an experience with what I call a coin investor, rather than a collector.
My local coin shop owner contacted me about the possibility of selling one of my 1916D Mercs.; as he had a Costumer ask for one.
I have a friend that is moving from here in the Midwest down to Florida and had just approached me about buying his Mercury collection.
My friend is in his 90s and had only ever collected Mercs. Starting as a young paper boy in the late 20s. He had a nice full set of Mercs. Most though were EF to AU, with the expected MS and BU dates.
He told me he would only sell the whole collection, as he could not stand the idea of it being broken up.
I met the costumer at the shop, with the owner and after a lot of discussion back and forth he agreed to the purchase price. Upon which he popped the 16d, and the two 41/2s out and looked me dead in the eye and said "the rest of this is junk, you can keep it".
Scooby I wish you the best of luck! And I hope you have many more hunts before you!
