Coin sets? I see them all the time in the Daily News. I bought a set because it was free and you have to pay $14 shipping and handling. When I got the set of quarters from different states, I wasn't too thrilled about it. Are these legitimate coins in the newspaper?

Thank you kindly

Not sure what set you're talking about. I have seen ads for colorized coins, plated coin sets, and altered two dollar bills. All sell for a significant premium, and none (IMO) are worth the money. These sellers hype the "collectible" aspect, but in reality, these things are mass-produced from common circulating money and are more or less damaged coins and currency. How many quarters were in the set you received? $14 seems high for shpping. Common ebay tactic (or it used to be) was set high shipping charges to offset any loss on the item being sold. Makes it seem like a good deal untill you total the entire cost.

I expect they are advertised as "Guaranteed Genuine" as well. That is true. What coins in your pocket are not genuine coins? That is an easy guarantee to make and stand behind. Those kinds of guarantees are usually backed with "Money back if not 100% satisfied" and in small print "purchase price only and not shipping and handling". They make their profits in the non-refundable shipping and handling. When buying coins it is always better to buy from a local dealer, coin show or where you can get your purchase price refunded. Always educate yourself before putting your money down. That is why you will find this website valuable... the knowledge and information available.

That is why I learn from the good people on here and research. I will never do that again. At least I am $1.25 richer LOL. Thank you all for the advice and you guys hit the nail on the head with the guarentees, refund etc etc.

My advise is to stay away from news paper ads touting coins of any kind. They are usually over priced for what you get, or you may wind up in a long term monthly service contract that you do not want for more over priced coins.

Thanks Tim, that is what they were trying to do when I ordered my quarters. I told them to cancel my autoship and just send me the first order. They were very pushy on getting the different states every month. That is what made me very skeptical.

Thanks guys for the advice

And let's extend the skepticism to the full-page ads for those who skip into town for a weekend, set up shop in a second-rate hotel, and buy coins, gold, antiques, Japanese samurai swords, whatever. Patronize your local antique and coin ships and jewelers first - almost any of them will give you a much better deal for the valuables you're willing to part with. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and state that any such local shop which has been in business for ten years or even five years or more is probably still in business because of better-than-average customer service. Seek them out first.
