I don't think of Us look at as contentious it may come across that way. I think it is an unknown we have no idea who he is grooming for this position. It could come across as a big what if scenario. Which is a good subject but still an unknown. Some folks are uncomfortable with unknowns. It could be also putting the cart before the horse in a matter of speaking. I hear what your saying but I think he has it covered. I think we ask this question is we don't know the answer. There in lies the riddle. Will this person or persons be acceptable to the VAM community. Tracy

Oz states, " But I would think and hope the criteria needed would be of the candidate or candidates impeccable integrity. Some one who is very capable of attributing and this aspect narrows the field considerably." I think this is sound, probable, excellent advice based on reality also playing a strong part of the decision. Reality referring to the actual agenda of those considered. I will say this topic is an amazing recurring one and like everyone else involved in the wonderful, addicting hobby, hope for the decision to also incorporate the sobriety of any candidates considered, knowing where this could take the hobby also would effect the entire future, with ALL due respect I feel this topic can and usually does, go in a direction which I find, IMO, many do NOT want discussed.. Another good reason I enjoy the freedom to discuss this and other topics that "merit no discussion".....

Being acceptable to the VAM community is IMO, not the factor which would mean as much as the person or persons being placed in the position to grow the hobby to the best of their ability for everyone to continue to gain knowledge and information, with out being excluded from being able to partake in the knowledge based on the striking hands of those who ban others for simply asking questions, THINK about it!! Knowledge is power, power to some is NOT using it correctly.

being one small member of the Vamming community its not a wonder why I or others like my self have no input...its not a democracy where we all will vote..That being said......It would clearly be impossible that no forethought of what will eventually happen, as He has spent the vast amount of his life in promoting and attributing....That legacy would not be just tossed aside, as it is bigger than he....This is also very true to those who have come before us for the many other denominations that have been studied and classified, known experts of there time and valid references we still value today....As with every passing of time its not an end but a turning of the page, and a continuation of the story.....Who will be telling the story is yet to be revealed....yet there are many who also have spent 30 plus years within this very field.. Playing by the same rules.....So I do not think a whole new game will take place......

There are issues that beset any hobby. Vamming being no exception. That are lots of issues, some of these are multi-faceted and difficult to come to grips with, but I am of the opinion this hobby should be inclusive rather than exclusive especially if there are dissenting opinions. All of us have something to add to the mosaic that is the great VAM puzzle if we each take the time to look at these beautiful artifacts we call Morgan and Peace dollars. In an e-mail to Leroy Van Allen, I commented that vamming has allowed me to have the wonder and awe as when I first discovered Morgan dollars as a young boy. That I felt like that young boy again looking at these beautiful artifacts for the first time. Leroy's reply was it has been a lifelong passion for him as well and he was happy that I enjoyed vamming as much as he has. I very appreciate CCF allowing all of us the opportunity to openly and cogently discuss the issues of this facinating hobby. I very much believe that sharring information openly and freely is the key to success.

Terry, I would say you have an amazing knowledge base of the hobby, your way with the Queen's English in the way you choose to use those words also speaks volumes of your communication skills with others. I would also say YOU are among the few I believe are very well versed in Grading, I believe some work very hard, like myself to be able to do as you seemingly have a natural ability to do so well, NOT to say you did not take part in doing the research and effort over the years needed to do this, but to commend you for what others just do not quite have the art down to a science as you do. I too have been collecting starting as a young boy since 1963 and do not have the grading aspect down, close but not to a comfortable level. I also appreciate you bringing your experience and knowledge here to this forum and share the same as you do, Thanks for being there, Mike....PS, I too feel like a child as I gleam over the Anna's AND Theresa's like it was the first time, every time. I would like to mention the friends I have made in the adventure of this hobby, whom with out, Things would NOT be near the same!!!

I can whole heartedly agree with you there...And despite some differences, which everyone has, It is my hopes that all will build the positives while the differences can work them selves out over time... It's a great hobby That most find worth the time they spend examining and researching rather than be just a "couch potatoe" Vamming will continue to grow , even in these last few years I see it at small shows, a few VAMS here and there, the small shops have few posted as they are aware of it and have a few of the cherry picker coins.....On the internet its all over....People are looking, and wanting to learn......The positives out weigh all the rest..and we should promote that, as well as what to look out for, as with any collectible item...its the knowledge that lets you know if your getting a good deal or being taken....

Mike, in my evolution as a vammer, the truly great surprise for me were the enduring friendships that I have made with people who share the same passion. As much as I enjoy vamming and I do, I could put it down tomorrow and not miss it, but not the friends I have made. I value the friendships above all else. I have had the great luck and privilege to have been mentored by two of the finest vammers in the hobby. The warmth of the their friendship and openness to share have been a revelation and have truly touched me. There are so many things you learn when people are willing to openly share their hard earned lessons.

Quote:But think about this. I find a 1901-O VAM 39-A in PCGS plastic and pay forty-one dollars for it. And now I want to sell it to you the new collector for five hundred dollars. Last year it was suggested it price out at two thousand five hundred dollars. I tell you it is a good deal. You believe it is a good deal. The deal is consumated as I sell it to you for five hundred dollars. I walk away with four hundred fifty nine dollars. How many multiples over forty-one dollars is this? What does a DOUBLE TRIFECTA on 1901-O 39 A tell us? It tells us several things (1) The gentleman from Illinois is an exceptional vammer (2) or he is extraordinarily LUCKY (3) VAM 39-A might not be as rare as previously thought (4) The laws of supply and demand may likely moderate pricing on these coins and others just like it. (5) There might not be a lot of vammers looking for this coin. (6) There might not be anymore found. The Gentleman from Illinois may have emptied out the mother-lode (7) It is imperitive to have accurate census counts on this type of coin. (8) Stranger things have happened, but this may be akin to being struck by lightning SIX STRAIGHT TIMES.

Unfortunately....I am just a simple collector...I see what I want to see...despite the overall picture of BIG BUSINESS.. I don't have the money to play the hype for certain vams and the $$$Dollars associated with them...But like many here.. I'm not ignorant either....If I play the craps table, it depends on where I want to spend my money...on the low side or the high roller side......That is our choice... WE ARE NOT HERE to say how great it is and spend all you money on vams...as some would think.....THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN HERE on this forum.. THIS forum...accepts all inquires....but I'm out of warm beer so I will leave it here, need to turn the propane up....
