How exactly do you know if they are 40% silver halfs or 90%?

1964 and before are 90% (currently .36 oz of silver) and 40% are 1965-1970 (they have .14 oz of silver). The proofs are a different story though. Some are 40% and some are 90%. the 1976s proof MAY be 40%. they started to make some 90% silver proofs in 1992. They have both 90% and clad.

you can usually tell by dropping a silver coin on the ground. The silver coins have a higher pitch than copper-nickel clads.

Spending them is fun also. Go to Taco Bell and buy your lunch with them just to see what happens. Use a couple of $2 bills or a beat up Ike along with them if you can.

yes that is always fun. I get looks all the time. I have never been denied. But I have asked for half dollars from the bank and the lady thought they were dollar coins. I had to explain that they were only worth half of a dollar.

Yea, I cashed my duplicates back in today and am going to head back out tomorrow and get some more from regions. What banks have you had luck at, I hit about 6 banks today and none had any. I live in Brentwood and it is a very rich area so you would think that people would have some, but I think there are a lot of collectors around my area.
