I have a collection from 1939-2012 that I have been adding to from my Grandfathers collection for the past 5 years or so. I was planning on buying the first 3 years of production to add to the set but haven't gotten around to it as of yet

I've purchased directly from the US Mint the Silver Proof Sets for each of my 3 oldest kids in the years they were born (2005, 2007, 2009).

I also recently picked up the 2010 & 2012 Silver Proof Sets for our soon-to-be daughter. We are adopting a little girl who was born in 2010, and the adoption should be finalized within a couple of months in 2012 and we can take her home (is there a little "knock-on-wood" icon here? - nevermind, I just did)

I will be giving these sets to each of my kids when they're old/responsible enough to have them.

I have also have been getting the Silver Eagle each birth year for myself.

Hello,

Generally, I do not collect proof sets unless they are silver or are rare like this lucky SBA 'clear S' find that I scooped up at a yard sale for about $ 15:

This one is also special to me from fact that this was one of the last CCF threads that one of my now-deceased CCF friends, biggfredd, weighed in on with his expertise.

I hope everyone finds this thread useful in their search for rare proof sets valued much more than the average ones.

I too collect ALL Mint sets and proof sets and silver sets.
I have ALWAYS been an original package lover, I enjoy the sets in their beauty. I have all the mint/proof sets from 1952 to date, I really love the mint sets which came on boards of cardboard and there are 3 one for each mint, IF that mint made coinage that year. I have many multiples of many years too, one is NOT enough, some are nicer than others and well, are just there for me to collect.

Bryan, Your Grandfather must of had some collection,I wish I had a family member who collected prior to my starting my first 1941 to date Whitman Cent blue book back in 1963, ( .23 cents )!!! I hope to complete my collection of these sets, IF I can, I also have 20-30 of the SMS and while I would not crack any open, I see some wonderfully frosted cameo's in the bunch that while they have a value in $$$$$, looking at them is PRICELESS.......

I do have a few proof coins, but nearly all of them are before about 1960, when Mints around began to market them to collectors and make big profits from their sale.

My problem is that proofs before about 1960 can be very pricey.

I'm building a modern type set from 1999 forward using proof sets. And of course liberating them from their packaging. :)
