Does part (A) and part (H) refer to the same coin ?

There's a natural flow from a to h, but it isn't necessarily a circle.

Ok, I have a guess that covers all but (B). I an heading out and likely won't be back until after 11pm, so I am thinking of tossing it out there anyways.

Ok, I'll never get the French phrase with this line of thinking, so I'm just going to throw this out there and let you pick it apart.
(a) It was the first decimal while predecimal, Pence
(b) and the last of it sported a French phrase. ?
(c) On it there was a woman, Queen Victoria
(d) she had (among many) three grandsons, two by blood and one by marriage, whose images graced coins of their lands. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany King George V of the United Kingdom Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias
(e) All three looked to the west, but one of them only when he was not alone, and other -- only when he was. King George V and Nicols II to the west Kaiser Wilhelm II to the east. (west on 1901 5 mark) (f) Two grandsons united in war against the third, King George V and Nicholas II against Kaiser Wilhelm II (World War I)
(g) and the end of the war found two of the three off the throne. George V maintained the throne.
(h) One of the dethroned is featured on the prize coin. The coin is dated 1897 and has the face value of one. One Ruble

OK, here we go. My shot at it Question 1 (a) It was the first decimal while predecimal, I'll go with the Florin here as you have 10 Florins to a pound. (b) and the last of it sported a French phrase. The phrase is Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense, it appeared on the ½ Crown, Shilling, 6 Pence and of course the Florin. Last one to sport the French phrase would have been KM781 in 1901(c) On it there was a woman, Queen Victoria(d) she had (among many) three grandsons, two by blood and one by marriage, whose images graced coins of their lands. George V of Great Britain and Wilhelm II Germany by blood, Nicholas II Russia by marriage(e) All three looked to the west, but one of them only when he was not alone, and other -- only when he was. Both Nicholas and George faced left on their coins. Wilhelm faced left on a 1901 5 mark with Empress Augusta Victoria. On the historical side of this one could also interpret this as George V looking to the West (US) for help in WWI, Nicholas looking to GB for exile before his execution (they were together in the war) and then Wilhelm (alone) looking to the US to negotiate a peace treaty (this is a little known piece of trivia). He approached the US but the effort was rejected by the Allied powers. (f) Two grandsons united in war against the third, George and Nicholas vs. Wilhelm WWI(g) and the end of the war found two of the three off the throne. Nicholas abdicated and was executed along with his family, Wilhelm lost and was removed, George V remained(h) One of the dethroned is featured on the prize coin. The coin is dated 1897 and has the face value of one. KM59.3 1 Rouble 1897

well if I am reading svslav's post correclty - I did get it right but I still need 2 more wins to get the coin. But I'm on my way!
And that was fun. I had the darndest time with the whole facing to the west thing, that was tricky. I finally saw the 10 florins to a pound thing making it sort of a decimal.

Nice job weavus! I don't stand a chance in this contest, but I'll enjoy watching it.

Quote: I don't stand a chance in this contest while I most sincerely doubt this, I'm fine with you conceding and making it easier for the rest of us I happen to like history and when I saw this, I could think of only a couple of events that this might historically match and when I saw the date of the coin, I figured it had to be WWI.

Yes! Couple of remarks: (a) Florin was the first attempt to decimalize the pound. It was first minted during Victoria. (b) Victoria saw a few types of florin during her reign, the last one had a garter, on the reverse, around three shields with the French phrase, what weavus said, translation "Evil to him who evil thinks". (e) George V was always alone on the coins and always faced left (to the West). Wilhelm faced right on all coins on which he was alone, on a couple commemoratives with his spouse he faced left. Nicholas faced left on every coin (alone) with the only exception, 1913 commem. ruble for 300th anniversary of Romanov dynasty, on which he is with Mikhail Romanov. (h) For the prize coin. Of two dethroned, Wilhelm never appeared on 1 mark, besides, I mentioned in the OP it would be a large silver coin, and 1 mark is not exactly large. My coin is not as nice as weavus' illustration, but hey, think of how much history it carries!

I took a picture I found off the web. I do not own that coin I pictured. Just to be clear! Your example, svslav, is real pretty. and you are correct, a lot of history behind it. It is amazing how interwoven the governments were back then (I mean by blood or marriage). I hated that part when I was in college and taking some European history, I just couldn't remember who was married or having an affair with who. Quite a tangled web.
Is there another question coming tonight at 11PM forum time?
