While I can tell you with a 100% degree of certainty what variety your coin is, I am not experienced with grading w1a9c8k5.... I am limited to comparing raw coins with graded coins.... based on that, it would be my tenderfoot guess that AU might be wildly optimistic.... my guess would be more in the VF-30 range.... but then, I really do not know anything about grading, so my guess is virtually worthless, and should not be even considered in the poll.... Although a different variety, here is a comparison coin of the same year..... it is slabbed as VF-20 (with no details listed).

wouldn't that grade be on account of the XV that looks to be scrathed in on the reverse?

Ufans, I think the reason why everyone is saying AU is because his example is weakly struck and has better luster than a VF-30. Comparing it to an 1837 half dollar is like comparing apples and oranges IMO. They have totally different striking characteristics.

Thanks.... like I said, I don't get into the grading arena.... I came upon this thread by accident as I was in the wrong forum.

Don't be disappointed with that, you still have an amazing looking coin. While late to the game on this one, I wouldn't have gone as high as AU. It's a solid EF and PCGS got it right in my opinion.

It might have been netted down for a light cleaning if there was one.

And it could easily grade AU50 if submitted tomorrow. Don't fret over the 45 grade, it sounds a touch low but "original luster" is very important at the AU level and that might have hurt it as SC eludes too.
