From the pictures some close ups of numbers 1 and 3
might help the 7's on those two coins look like they
are level with the 9 in the date. Can't quite clearly see the curl
of the 9.
Then again it might be the way they are lit

I'm looking at the inner loop of the 9 on number 4 it looks pretty good....I don't think 1 & 3 have a chance

Thanks for that info. I've been looking for one like that for some time now. Several years ago they had those at Walmart right before christmas but were sold out when I got there and never had them again. Odd too that I've got the BHP catalog and never thought of looking in there.
As to the 70S, if in good enough condition, there is a crease where the top of the 7 meets the virticle portion on the Large date but not on the small date. Top of 7 is level with the rest of the date in the small date but a bit lower in the large date.
Clear photos in the Red Book.

is it completely obvious when you have the two types next to eachother?
Yes it is. I highly recommend that you go to a coin show and find a dealer with both, which is what I did. Looking at photos never really worked for me. I had to see them in hand to finally get it.

When I look for the 1970 Small Date Cent I look for the 0 If you want a definitive answer as to whether these are small dates give us a pic of each coin it will help to see the date better.

by the way, I need a nice magnifying glass, what would any of you recommend that is sturdy, works great, and not too expensive?

I was able to pick one of these up for $2.99, but the guy isn't selling them anymore, so here is the next best.
