I saw this coin on ebay and the seller doesn't even know if it is real or fake. What say ye?  |

100% Fake. Real Trade dollars were produced from 1873 to 1885 and have a different design than the coin pictured.  Edited by fenton

Possibly a prototype design?
It does have a certain appeal.

Yes, it is similar to a very rare Trade dollar pattern. Even so, there is basically zero chance that the lump of metal shown is a genuine pattern. |

I wouldnt buy if I have to guess. That coin looks too generic for me to think it's real. I dont like how that Liberty is on that globe for some reason. That was the first thing I saw.

Yes I think this is a poor copy of this pattern coin: "J-1220 (A-W 1244). Trade dollar. Obverse with William Barber's copy of the Longacre design with 13 stars on the flag. The reverse is a new die and bears the inscription TRADE / DOLLAR / 420 GRAINS / 900 FINE within a luxuriant olive wreath, tied with a bow at the bottom which is inscribed GOD OUR TRUST. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears at the top border. Silver, reeded edge." NOTE: You won't see one of these up on ebay for sale unslabbed. You'll see it in a PCGS holder marketed by the likes of a Heritage or other major auction house. Edited by fenton

OK, I looked up "pattern coin" on wikipedia. Very interesting! So there probably wasn't very many of the real thing ever made since they were just "trying out a new design" I suppose. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_coin |

A pattern coin is produced in very small quantities to evaluate a design. They do not generally enter circulation and are often found in museums or very high end collections.

seen 4 fakes today--pretty funny 2 morgans with weird lettering on the back and two 1799 -bust dollars--all 4 we picked up with a magnet!  Retired USAF 1983-2003

yes the guy bought them for 5 dollars a piece from "some guy at work" 20 bucks for scrap metal!
