Collection or obsession? On Monday I am making my annual trip to the Safety deposit box. I need to add last years additions to my variety set. Seems last year I spent way too much. I am beginning to think my wife has a point when she says I'm obsessed. Do you think my coin habit has gone beyond the realm of hobby into obsession? Edited by nohope587 02/05/2011 8:19 pm

What we have is a numismatic passion. Coins are worth exactly what it says on the reverse - the history is worth more.

Y'know, in my case (and I know this isn't true for all collectors by any means), I would sell back any or all of the collection if a financial emergency arises. You can't do that with the money we've spent of many other "hobbies" (movies, eating out, clothes, ...)
Nice collection, but the way!

You can never buy too many coins for your collection! Obsessed? Not a chance!

What the difference between collecting and an obsession. Can you afford to buy the coins? Would you sell them? Can you live without them?
Yes = collection. No = obsession.

What a magnificent obsession! You never know, your wife may clean up on those when you kark it! Perhaps that explains her toleration.

Don't listen to the wife. Zohar444 is right on. You could be doing alot, alot more other things that are much, much worse. Collection and a passion, as stated above, are what you have. People who don't like coin collecting, don't understand it. If you love what you are doing and enjoy it, keep doing it. Looks like you got some really neat stuff!!

I believe you are walking a fine line between the two but I also believe you are in good company because I think we all straddle the fence every now and then. With me the fence seems to be torn down and its easy to cross over without ever knowing you are in foreign territory

The key question here ... how much do you love your wife?
Priorities my friend. Priorities.

I also realize I would be lucky to get 50% of what I paid for it if I needed to sell. I suspect a lot less than that as dumping a large amount of one type of coin on the market at any one time will have an adverse effect on the price. My collection was always intended to be part of my retirement fund and I will have no qualms about divesting it later on in life. I would just like to complete it first. Not likely to happen. Yes = collection. No = obsession. The answer to that one is yes ( I think...) Quote: The key question here ... how much do you love your wife? More than you would know. She has no interest in coins but has taught herself the basics of Mr Longacre's 2 Cent coins to the point that she can spot certain varieties with the naked eye. She always goes to shows with me. I think mainly because they have jewelry on sale at most..

Nice collection nohope, I know when I spend a couple hundred bucks for a Lincoln Cent my wife looks at me like I'm crazy and then she has buyers remorse for me for a couple of weeks and then she asks me if I can get my money back from the coin if I needed to, my answer is always no, but I can get close. a few weeks later it's forgot until the next time. obsession, not really, I think it is better described as passion.
