So if you find a nickel from 1942 to 1945 and it has the large mint mark above the building it is a silver War Nickel, but what if you nickel has no mint mark and falls between those years? |

my guess is either a Henning nickel or some other fake...altho Hennings can be collectable

and there were some 42's that were made without silver as well

well it is a 1942, so probably pre-october of that year... Oh well back to searching

Even though they don't have silver in them, I would still hold on to 'older' Jefferson nickels. I keep all nickels pre-1960. You can roll 'em up and sell them as mixed date rolls for a slight premium. Some people need these to fill holes in sets. |

I keep all Jeffersons that are Pre-1950.......and any "S" mints I find.

Good luck finding a 50d in circulation.
Has anyone here ever done it?

Has anyone here ever done it? My best find was 25 warnix in a roll, plus some Buffs. I think there was only 2-3 coins not keepers. Never found a 50d or 39d. A friend of mine did, but that was around 40 years ago. A local banker snagged a bag of them. |

Yes, I found a 50d in a box about a month ago. Took roughly 185K of nickels (92 boxes) before one showed up.

Back to the original question. Note that there are 1942 and 1942D Nickels not made with the Silver. Those do not have a mint mark over the dome. Then when they switched to the Silver Alloy in 1942, they started with the 42P over the dome. No D over the done coins though.
