I have been chasing this coin for a while. But I am feeling insecure buying the coin because of the incuse scratches on the 9 in 1797. Any thoughts?

Very difficult to be certain but I completely agree that it has the appearance of a fake because the tops of all the letters seem to be concave. That points to a hump in the die or mold. That happens most often in the case of a plastic mold that is pulled off the host coin before the plastic has fully hardened. Duplicating this type feature on a die is conversely difficult.

I would not buy this one EXCEPT as a fake.

That is a lot for a modern copper counterfeit.
