I couldn't help it. After my post and reading all of your posts along with a good thinking process I decided to get these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&rd=1http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&rd=1They may seem a little high but it is my budget and I decided to concentrate on getting the Franklins done. I have won auctions from them before. Though the prices tend to go a little high sometimes I have never been unhappy with anything I have gotten from them. They have other coins but tend to specialize in Franklins it seems. These put me two steps closer to reaching a goal which is what I really needed as I was feeling burned out and this has rejuvanated my desire to keep collecting. I can't wait to get them!

OK it sounds like there are just to many people out there wasting time collecting to many things at one time. I will be glad to give a true solution to all your problems with this subject. I'll send you my address. You can aquire a large box at the post office for a flat rate fee of $8 and some change. Pack up all your excessive coins and send them to me. I will gladly put up with this problem of just to many coins. Similar to what a few have said I too collect just to much STUFF. For well into the 60 year area I have accumulated just to many coins. I too started with Cents, then Nickels, Dimes, etc. etc. As set #1 of anything filled I started a backup set #2. The best coins went into #1 and then to #2 and then to #3, etc. I now have 10 sets of Lincolns, 3 sets of Indian Head cents, 3 sets of Liberty Head Nickels, 3 sets of Buffalos Nickels, 10 sets of Jefferson nickels, 8 sets of Mercury dimes, etc., etc. etc. All are complete except the missing 1913 Liberty nickel of course. When I acquire a new coin it has to be for a set #1, which moves the one from #1 to #2, etc. Then the last ones go into 2x2's and I now have about 10 double row boxes of them. Then there are the Proof sets, Uncirc sets, and just miscellaneous coins I like. As I tell people I collect coins they always give me foreign coins. I do not collect them but take them anyway. I also now have about 1,000 of them in one big box. However, there is always room for more.

Where did we get our indoctrination that "efficiency is good" ? There's no way that it came from public schools or the military. Must be a "share-holders value" thing. Luckily, I'm neither a share-holder nor likely to ever be one, so I view efficiency as the fast lane to atrophying. Slack rules. Slack is your reserve strength that you can call upon when you need more. If you need more time, money and energy to keep up with what your doing how will you get it if your operating at a 100% and losing ground? Neil Young should've said: "Keep on atrophying with just in time delivery in the free world..." Because that's exactly what we're doing to ourselves. http://www.williammcdermott.com/drunk_bear.jpg

Every now and then there is a sour apple in the barrel. Ya know, I was going to edit and say what I had to say, but, I am just not going to do that. I am a better person than that bud. You have a good day.

Aye, lass, there may be another one or two I might have my eye on along the way. Good to hear from you again, was wondering where you went.

Being new to the hobby also (March 2005) I know what you mean about wanting some of everything, and that's just what I've done over the past year and a half. I've got a little bit of ewverything from Half Cents to Sacagaweas; however, somewhere in that period of time, I started concentrating, primarily, on dollar coins and half dollar coins. I've been pretty lucky in finding good deals where I got the coin I wanted without paying an arm and a leg for it. Of course, my collection consists mainly of circulated coins - my preference, and the key dates are lower grade, but, on my income, that's the ones I can afford, and I'm happy with them. I collect coins by date and mint mark rather than by grade, and, in doing so, I've been able to complete my Sacs, SBAs, Ikes, ASEs, all but 1 Peace, and all but 15 Morgans. In my half dollar collection I've been able to complete my Kennedys, Franklins, all but 1 Walking Libertys, and all but 7 Barbers. Of course, the missing ones are key dates, and out of my price range at the present, but you never know when you might stumble on a great deal. Now, to me, concentrating on one or two areas doesn't mean I have to give up on buying a coin of any other type. If I find a good deal, and can get it for the price I'm willing to pay, it's mine - no matter the denomination. I have become so enthralled with this hobby that I would never consider selling even one of my coins unless I found myself in an absolute emergency, and had no choice. If that were to happen, each sold coin would be like losing a small piece of my heart.

Hi Irishraider, like your new avatar, and sounds like the frustration is gone from your posts. I like the Bens too, and just found the last coin (51 Proof) to complete my set of FBL's with Proofs after a 3 year plus search for just the one hole. It's a great feeling, and I just like contemplating it....still haven't freed the 51 Ben from his encapsulated prison, but will very soon. I think your focus is a good one, because with all the Bens lost in the great meltdown it will be harder to put a good set together in the future. Sooo, ENJOY!!! Dennis

Irishraider,
Despite the large number of concurrent threads you have going, you sound like you're well organized and have a good handle on everything.
Keep in mind that the number one goal for any hobby is the enjoyment of it. If you are enjoying it, why do you need to change anything at all? =)
One tip, to get some extra mileage out of your existing collection, is to pick up volume one of the Cherrypicker's Guide, and beginning with your pennies, start going through them looking for die varieties! You might find something valuable that you didn't even realize you had! I recently found a 1936 triple die penny in a batch of unsorted wheat cents I bought from a vest pocket dealer at one of my coin club meetings, so they're definitely out there waiting to be found. =)
