What do you think would happen if the Mint decided to eliminate the penny from circulation?
The extra 7 billion cents minted each year would stop, the mint would take back the pennies from the banks,
and what would be left? The ones in the buckets under the table. Makes you think.
I think this is getting closer to becoming a reality. Do all of the cents double overnight?
Hmmmmm makes you wonder.

I think the mint should quietly quit making them, since most people just waste them now. Orders from the fed should be ignored by the mint. Eventually, orders from the banks would be ignored by the fed. Do not announce it, just do it.

Eventually the supply will dry up and most people will continue to care less. I still believe businesses would rather round cash totals down than create a fuss with their cash customers (the same customers that prevent a percentage of their transaction from going to the card processor).

People only care when you tell them you are taking something away. If something as (generally) unwanted as the cent just quietly disappeared, would anyone (besides those of us on forums like this) make a fuss?

Used to have the little tray, with a new version sign:

Got a penny?
Leave a penny.
Need a penny?
Get a job!
