I keep seeing ebay auctions of people claiming errors with paper currency but it's obvious they've just purchased a sheet of bills and cut them themselves improperly. Why do people even bid on auctions when they clearly state that the errors are not from the BEP and they are faked. In all of these auctions, it'd be cheaper to just buy a sheet of currency and make a dozen of these so called fakes.

I don't even think it can be a violation because they blatantly state that the errors are faked, but in that case, why are people bidding so much for them?

$56 for this!

There is some question as to whether or not P. T. Barnum ever uttered the phrase, but he never denied it. "There's a sucker born every minute."
Thomas Tusser might have said "A fool and his money are soon parted".
Both of these statements, regardless of the speaker, are true.

The only true and accurate explanation for this is that the bidders are all Dumba** idiots.

In my opinion, you are correct - there is no violation as the description clearly states it is a "faux" error - what is unfortunate is that perhaps prospective bidders may not realize this even though it is clearly stated in the description.

Clearly this is, in my opinion, a "novelty" item and in my opinion this is where it should be listed not in the "error" section. I suppose perhaps it could just be simply a lack of simple common sense by people bidding so high, but that is another subject.

Bottom line is there is no violation as far as the description of the item.

What about the winning bidder NOT telling the next buyer it's fake?

It's ebay. Buyers just have to be diligent and avoid losers like this. Education is key.

Because they fail to read the description. I just had a buyer ask me if a coin was cleaned when I stated it right there in plain english.

I know what you mean, shadowcreator. On craigslist people ask me about things I state on the ad, so obviously they didn't read it.
Just goes to show how careless some people are.

Its not just on the bay. I had a customer at a show pick out a 43 Lincoln from my "bargain" bin and ask me if I knew it was replated. My response was "yes, thats why it says across the 2x2 in big red letters "REPLATED"." I wouldn't have minded if it was a runny nosed kid but it was a 30 tomething in a suit!

^^^ ahahahah thats too much, my reaction would have been the same. Would have been okay with it if just some kid, but it's ridiculous how oblivious some adults can be.

Have to completely agree with Ziggy- whether in public at a show or over the internet- people read half a page, don't pay attention to the ACTUAL information and then think anything similar is certainly a rare error or valuable coin.

The issue at hand is that information is TOO accessible, so many people take it's availability for granted and never take the time to learn. Then when they see something different, they insist it's incredibly rare. Even when you attempt to explain, you're taken as the moron, they know better, they saw it somewhere on the internet!

Caveat Emptor!
