For me it started when I was about 10 helping my grandmother looking through gallon jars of wheat cents. Then I moved on to looking for older coins in change for her. Later in life I started collecting silver in the early 70's and been going strong since. Of course I tried to collect all but that didn't work out so I basically collect Classic and Modern Commemoratives now.

Sadly no one in my family collects coin but me :( The earliest memory of me keeping a coin was when I was around 8 and I was at my cousins house. When I was there in the basement I noticed a few coins on the ground. I decided to look at them and noticed a 1976 bicenntenial quarter (still have it!). I decided to keep it because I liked the design. I really started off last year because of a TV SHOW believe it or not. It was Pawn Stars and it was the episode where they find the Old Mans copper pennies. A week later I asked my mom to take me to the bank and got $5 of pennies. I kept doing this for a few months then the urge got stronger. Within a few months I started to collect copper, pre '60 nickels, silver, and Buffalo nickels! I am slowly expanding and trying to get my family to do it someday!

Nice origin story.

Remember, if you get more of your family involved you will be competing with them for finds.

I started when granny gave me a Morgan $ 1 every Christmas starting when I was 7.

I guess you could consider it collecting or hoarding since I threw them in a shoe box and forgot about them until somebody stole this box: bummer.
