Keep in mind, optics are very much an area where you get what you pay for. The images you posted in your other thread are beyond the abbility of a "cheap" anything; nohope587's image here is about as good as it gets unless you're spending a few hundred dollars at least.

And there's a tradeoff when working with a microscope - the better these fine details are, the less-likely you are to be able to shoot an entire coin at once because of field-of-view limitations.

Hi cammed, here are a few from my Celestron 20-200, 2mp USB microscope.
I agree with Superdave, it isn't as good as my Canon 50D, and can't capture a full coin due to the limited vield of view at that magnification, but for small details it is great.

wow, those are some pretty good results. I'm thinking about testing the waters and buying a cheap one like 40-50 bucks to see if I like it.

I'm on board with everyone here that the microscopes are great for the detailed shots. However, they pale in comparison to the better pictures taken with the dSLR's on this forum.

I agree. The microscope has a narrow niche where it is of value. I do use mine and I also use my Canon 50D DSLR.

The one advantage I see for the 'scope is when I want to take a quick look and a snapshot of some variety on a large cent. The 'scope sits on my desk and in seconds I have the shot I need. Whereas the DSLR takes a lot more time.

Both have value.
