Recently photographing a coin. Trying to convey it's overall grade, but also it's unique toning.

Check out axial lighting so you can have both.

Those are good pics... I'm not the greatest at taking pics, but I try taking them at angles sometimes just for that reason... I think it's hard to capture toning in a pic, but it's probably from my lack of experience and a non-existant camera budget

I would follow SD's recommendation...angle the light; not the coin with the use of an axial lighting setup. You'll get the color/luster you're looking while keeping the entire coin in focus.
