I mentioned Flying Eagles problems with the hard nickel alloy. Indian Head cents were however the first to gain the nickname of "Nickels" or "Nicks". Although this was probably in reference to all small cents at the time (including Flying Eagles) because the larger copper cents were still in wide circulation. (1860s kid pays 4 cents for candy, and pulls out 1 large and 3 small cents from pocket change, he's got 1 copper and 3 'nickels') Edited by rjkingston 04/29/2011 2:59 pm Report this Post to the Staff
