We won't be implementing it here. When you see the name on a topic or post, just don't read it. If you find that hard to do, then you didn't really want to ignore them anyway.

If you've ever been on a stock discussion board, you'd understand the value of such a function. I, for one, am in favor of choice. It is simply an opt-in by a specific user to hide posts (from his/her view only) from selected user names. So if I'm tired of hearing the same old thing from CCF123, I could place them on ignore. It's user controlled. The same argument for con, could be used for pro: it you don't want to use it, don't. It's really no big deal. I've never used it, but I must admit it was kind of nice knowing I could at times. That said, I don't see a huge need for it, but I'm not against it at all. It's not even a sure thing this environment supports that functionality, so the discussion could be moot.

Could be useful, but I think more detrimental to the entire community... people that don't really add to the forum end up weeding themselves out anyway...

This forum has other ways of dealing with problem posters. If somebody is posting offensive or objectionable material, chances are you're not the only person being bothered by it.

If you don't like what someone else is posting, click the "Send Note to Staff" link. If the staff judge that the problem is actually with you, then the note will be ignored. However, if the problem really is with the poster you have a problem with, then that post will most likely be edited or deleted. If a poster is a troll that makes a habit out of posting objectionable things and annoying people, then most likely their behaviour will earn them a banning from the forum.

My original post was worded extremely politely and non threateningly.

All I did was inquire about a very, very common forum function available in many software packages.

I refuse to be drawn into a discussion of member behaviour, that is not what I asked about, is not up to me to deal with nor is it what my inquiry is about.

Thank you for the responses.

It is an interesting question, but I'd have to admit I'd be pretty hurt if I found someone had put me on an ignore list. I haven't really reached the point yet where I can offer much expertise, but I still like throwing my 2 cents in; someone might even say 'what a good idea'! Maybe not every time, but bound to hit the target every now and then. Plus, it's neat to read what folks from such a wide variety of places and backgrounds have to say, that's the real beauty of this forum. As they say in business, diversity is good!
