i recently bought some coins in western china and one appears to be an American Trade dollar. I have found a few on the net and this one looks the same but has the letters cc stamped between the line with 420 grains 900 fine and the words Trade dollar at the bottom. any body know what that means?

watch out for fakes, especially from China. If it a 1879 with the 'cc' then it is a fake. To my knowledge, the only 1879 Trade dollars are proof ones and all were made in Philly so they would not have a 'cc' mark.

Allmost certainly a fake. They even put cc mintmarks on dates in the 1840s, the mint opened in 1870.

thank you for your information, it is exactly what I needed. I am still intrigued by who the fake makers were, are we talking Chinese, American or just anyone wishing to use up low grade silver? any clues, and any particular time that they were made, thanks again jgb

I have seen some amazing fake (fantasy) date/mint combinations coming out of China. Most are them are not a good fake, but others make you wonder .

If it sounds too good to be true...it is.

Definitely Chinese in origin and almost certainly has zero silver content. It was also more than likely produced in the past ten years. The vast majority of the Asian fakes are composed of inexpensive white metals or even steel but some of the high end numismatic counterfeits do have proper silver weight. One with an impossible date and mintmark combination is definitely not high end

I had an 1879 S that was a fake also. Gave it back to the seller and he said he would resell it as a fake.
