Read the description and let me know if you have ever encountered this die variety before. I've come across just a few 1883 No cents varieties in my many years of searching 1000s of Liberty nickels. I think I have 3 or 4, but nothing like this piece. I think only 1 of mine is in Cherrypicker's Guide (CPG). My opinion is that the Liberty nickel series is very ripe for finding new RPDs, doubled dies and other varieties- I have quite a few in my collection that are not in CPG. Very few seem to be listed in CPG. Unfortunely, there are not a lot of people that collect Liberty nickels in contrast to Buffalo or Jefferson nickels. It's a shame, because Liberty nickels have low mintages for the most part and are very interesting as a series. Report this Post to the Staff
DVCollector Bedrock of the Community United States 10045 Posts	Posted 07/01/2011 1:06 pm I'm unfamiliar with Liberty 5c, but this RPD resembles those I see in the IHC series in the same time frame. For IHCs, 1882-3 was an interesting span, because there were many MPDs too, where the date punch was impressed into the denticles and recesses of the portrait, presumably to test die hardness. I wouldn't be surprised if Liberty nickels of the 1880s had many MPDs as well. Regarding scarcity, IHCs mintages for this period run about 300-400,000 per obverse die. Liberty 5cs may be harder on dies and have slightly shorter runs? Report this Post to the Staff
