Does anybody know exactly what is the problem with the packaging of the Special Edition Proof Set - 100th Anniversary of the 1911 Silver Dollar (2011)? A poster on the RCM website mentioned a problem with the 5 cent coin being off-center and slanted. What does that mean? TIA

I can't see how it can be off-center. It appears to be in a set holder. But slanted could mean it has been inserted into the holder poorly, and is at an angle to the holder's surface rather than flat. It may be sticking out above/below the surface. It might be touching the encapsulating clear plastic, which may risk damage.

The problem with the case is that the black foam/filler does not hold the coins in place tightly enough. This causes the coins to rotate and the thinner coins to fall back. RCM is saying they'll do something about it, what that means and when is still up in the air.

I haven't received mine yet. So I presume they are working on it.

I once bought a 1998 commem proof set that had a problem with the 5c. When I opened the package it was pretty obvious the 5c was at an angle - and also BENT. Poor little fishscale! I returned the set & got a replacement with no problem. For the sets it might be easier for the mint to use a piedford 5c.

I don't understand the logic of changing ONE to 1 on the dollar and large cent.

Quote: I don't understand the logic of changing ONE to 1... The numeral "1" is bilingual whereas the word "one" is strictly English. That's the explanation I've heard for why numerals are used on all our modern circulation coins.

LOL @ denominations on bullion LOL What a sad joke already.
@dialog: Back then Canada didn't have stupid bilingual language laws. It wasn't until about 1982 that most signs and such had to be bilingual. That's why we change the modern ONE to 1. It's silly but we do it like that.

Wow. I was born in Quebec and grew up there, and that never crossed my mind. Of course "ONE" being unilingual English is the reason for the change. But, it spoils the historical connection somewhat.
I guess technically our coins are actually trilingual: English/French neutral + Latin. I hope that never ends.

BTW, my sets arrived today. No problems with the 5 cent. Perhaps the reason it took so long is they fixed the problem.
They do look wonderful, and case is beautiful (and huge).

+1 on the French. I can't speak it but do appreciate the history, the Fleur de Lys don't look too shabby on the Canadian Crest. On a separate note: Just got a glimpse of the info sheet for the 2012 silver Kilo at the local dealer (not available yet even to masters club members). It will feature the Chinese Dragon design also used in the next scalloped $15 Chinese Lunar series coins. Don't know if I'm much of a fan for it, but if it turns out as good as the Kilo Maple Leaf, then I just might dig into my wallet again. The mintage on the Dragon kilo will be 6,888 since anticipated demand overseas will be high with it being the dragon and all. RCM seems to have expanded its dealerships in Asia as well, Other than that there'll be 2 more crystal snowflakes (though with a different name), another crystal dew drop, and follow-up to the queen's 60th.
