Opening A Proof Set - Coin Community Forum

newnumi New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 07/09/2011 12:16 am Hello! I have some proof sets that I am listing on ebay. From jiggling around over the years the coins have turned around so that the obverse side has 6 heads all at different angles (some upside down). I think it might turn off some buyers. Is it possible to discretely open the case and use a q-tip to straighten them up and reseal the set? If it is possible, it is uncool to mess with it? Thanks! NewNumi Report this Post to the Staff

Fuzzy317 Moderator United States 14463 Posts	Posted 07/09/2011 12:53 am it will probably be obvious they were opened, and there is a small risk of damaging the coins too. Coins rotate even in graded slabs. I think a real collector would be more "turned off" by opening than rotating. Report this Post to the Staff
murrellington Pillar of the Community United States 3276 Posts	Posted 07/09/2011 01:03 am definately don't open them. i'd buy ones that are rotated. like fuzzy stated, coins spin sometimes. tampering with it would turn away buyers. and if you don't mention that you opened it then buyers will not be happy. The US Mint proof sets made in the last ten years or so can be easily opened and closed without detection. The sets older than that can be carefully opened, but they will not close exactly the same as they were. It may be best to leave them alone, unless you want to take Graeme's advice to sell the coins individually.
