It's all about price. I understand paying a little extra for a coin with good eye appeal but seriously doubt anyone here is willing to pay several times fair market value for a coin. If there is please let me know exactly what you need & how many multiples of fair market value you are willing(& able) to spend......I could use the extra money to fill my 7070.

Eye appeal winning by a large margin! If a coin doesn't pop out to me, I'm usually not interested. Sometimes a closer look reveals more or something I missed, but it's gotta look good to the eye. This is a BIG problem with the web and buying coins using pictures. They mostly lie about how a coin really looks. A picture is but a tiny sliver of information about a coin. Pictures also tend to make a coin look much worse than it really is in hand....I don't care how good you are at taking them. IN THE EYE WE TRUST!  Edited by BadThad

When I shop online, looking at photos, I do not look at a coin long. I start to wonder if it looks as good or better than what the photo reveals. I just do not have the stomach to make an online purchase yet. |

Yup, eye appeal. If I am pleased it meets a buncha the other choices, do I want/need it for a spot in one of my favored collections? Or, as an upgrade?

I voted grade because IMO that encompasses several other factors like eye-appeal, problem-free, and parts of others in one answer. So many things converge tho it is not a simple answer for me.

The vast majority of my modern coins come from circulation and I have a couple of shops and a bar watching for new ones for me - as a result, I got all the 16 circulated 2012 London Olympic 50p coins (dated 2011) from circulation before the end of last year! For my pre-decimalisation ones, I get most from ebay. If see one that I need and the first thing that I look at is the charge for postage. If I consider it excessive, no matter how badly I want the coin, I will not bid for it. Obviously I watch the price of the item and keep bidding until it goes too high. Needless to say, the condition is a major factor, but in most cases I have been pleasantly surprised. I ignore any adverts with "L@@K RARE" or similar comments, as these sales are usually from complete amateurs who get a bulk load of any-old-coins and then try to offload them at a profit. Bill. |

I had to go with price, since I'm trying to fill album holes first and foremost (at the present time, anyway), but eye appeal was a close second.

 I've always known/felt EYE APPEAL was an important factor in the purchase of a coin for most Collectors, however, this thread sure shed some light as to how important that factor was! Glenn  |

I went with design, since I don't collect by series.
If the coin isn't of a design, I find I want, then there wouldn't be any eye appeal.
After design really comes price

 Some C.C.F.
