So this past weekend we had our annual August Birthdays barbeque as many people in my family were norn in August. I got a chance to see my Great Aunt this year as she flew in from Ontario ( we're in Manitoba ). It has been quite some time since our last encounter and we got on the subject of coin collecting. I happened to mention to her that I collect coins, especially old ones because I love history. Well it turns out that when her father passed away ( so my great grandfather ) she took his coin collection with her when they sorted through his things. She informs me that most of the coins in the collection are pre-1940 and they were mostly kept in a very large tin, which is now in her closet. Well it turns out she has no use or interest in these coins so she will be GIVING them to me!! AHH MAAHHH GAAAHHHHDDD There will be NO coins in there past 1968 so any dimes and quarters will all be silver...and she said there is literally HUNDREDS of coins in this tin...
my only problem is figuring out how to get them to me safely without damaging/scratching the coins any further then they already are..and I can't exactly drive there to get them..and mailing by weight is expensive..either way I will be aquiring this collection in the near future and I definately be posting an entire list of what I find in the tin!
Wish me luck !

Not too long ago my grand father, who was a navigator for Halifax bombers during the second world war, passed away from old age. Though its very sad and I do miss him quite a bit his collection of pre 1967 coins are fantastic! I had no knowledge of this collection until his passing, which is a shame because my passion for numismatics was really starting to bloom around his death.

Well, Ontario is right next-door to Manitoba => sounds like a roadtrip to Great Auntie's house (who knows what else may be lurking in her closet, right?) ...
=> "oh Dear, here is your Great Grandfather's old stamp album too ... oh and look, here's his old Winchester riffle laying right next to his WWII bomber's cap ... whatever am I going to do with all of this garbage!?"
SIDE-NOTE: Last month, when I was visiting my 88 year old Dad, he casually mentioned to me that his father's old cane fly-fishing rod was tucked-away in the crawlspace (basement nook) ... so I went downstairs and found it and then we both opened the original aluminum tube that it was housed inside and discovered that it was still in mint condition (Dad said that I should take it, so that somebody will be able to enjoy it) => and I definitely agree with nickelsguy => there is nothing more thrilling-chilling than gazing at a piece of history that was actually used 100 years ago by my grandfather (ROAD TRIP!)

Just send them UPS or another way that will handle the weight. Perhaps ask her to pack them inside of some kind of bag to keep them from making noise during shipment. If his collection is a tin can full of coins, I am sure that you will find something interesting and hopefully something scarce. A nice treasure that's for sure. I can only hope that a future generation enjoys the opportunity to look at my stuff the same way.

**MASSIVELY IMPORTANT UPDATE**
coins are on the way! should arrive in 7-10 business days. but there's even greater news..
As my aunt was prepping the coins to privately ship to me, she discovered a coin at the bottom of the tin encased in plastic that she had no idea was there...are you guys ready for this..
It's a gold coin...and no just any gold coin..a CANADIAN gold coin!! YEEESSSSS!!! she didn't tell me anything about it except for the fact that she knows its gold..and I can't even ask her what date it is because she's already packaged them for shipping and won't unpack it ( it never occured to her to tell me a date..just the fact that there was a gold coin in there.. )
I CANT FREAKNG WAIT!! AHHHMAAHHHGGAAAHHHHDD!!

**update #2**
Found out my great grandfather passed away in 1963 so all the coins in the tin are gauranteed to be PRE-1963
to think that this tin has been sitting in her closet for over 50 years!
She also weighed out the coins before packaging them ( for shipment costs and whatnot ) to find out its just over 2 pounds worth of coins...thats alot of loose coinage!
