Polished Pennys? - Coin Community Forum

trout1105 Pillar of the Community Australia 7096 Posts	Posted 08/17/2011 06:36 am I bought this the other day. Realy nice coin but ruined numisticly by polishing. I think I had my beer thinking cap on when I bought it BUT it has given me an idea This penny actualy looks realy nice ( a bit like rose gold) I have a heap of "not so flash" pennys, enough to make a dansco set up (without the 1930 of course). If I polished them up with brasso they would all look just like the 1925. I won't do it to any nice pennys but the set would be something totally differant. I havn't seen or heard of this being done yet. After a few decades the coins should re tone anyway, so I wont be destroying any of our Aussi heritage. Report this Post to the Staff

zic Valued Member Australia 121 Posts	Posted 08/17/2011 07:28 am I have an experience with other non-aussie coppers, and I would say that in 10-15 years nice tone(patina) will cover the coin, I think this will be the case with aussie copper as well Report this Post to the Staff

They look unnatural, even revolting. They never re-tone back to a natural looking coin even after 40 or more years and they lose most of their collectors value. just polishing a few of the semi-key dates ('31, '46 etc) will cost you over $100 on average grade coins. I bid on many sets and most collectors either do not bid on damaged coins or take 60-80% off. Report this Post to the Staff
