Hi everyone,

I was scanning through the 1859 pennies on ebay, when loe and behold I stumbled upon this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1859-1-cent...em3f0cff7fd1

The thing that's strange is that I'm sure I've seen that picture before (probably on Heritage Auctions), and there is no mention of any certification. Not to mention the fact that the seller has never done any buying or selling on ebay, is asking $75.00 for shipping, and is not accepting any returns.

Am I just being paranoid or does this seem strange?

1. Brand new seller as of the 15th of Aug this year
2. Quite a rare coin
3. No return policy
4. Crazy amount of shipping
5. Pictures are copied from HERE (2nd coin down)

Pretty sure you should pass on this

I have used ebay for years now and I can say with certainty that this is a scam. The 2 rules I live by when it comes to ebay is; 1) NEVER bid on any item from someone who has less than 30 feedbacks and all must be positive 2) Anyone who trys to make all their money on S&H so the bid looks low is at best unethical....AVOID!!

Oh now be nice. We all had to start somewhere. It didn't take 30 brave souls for the other 275 of my buyers to learn to trust me.

If a newbie has a good description with unique pictures and knows about a piece if I message them then I'll trust them if it's something simple

I bet ebay let him start at 30 since he's such a nice guy.

I am no fan of ebay, but they do have a good return policy to protect buyers.

I have received items in the past that did not match the seller's description and when the seller refused to reply to my emails, I simply filed a buyer refund request and got my money back a few weeks later via PayPal.

Some of the best deals are from ebayers with very low feedback. Some of them have no clue what they're selling, and are asking (buy it now) much less then the value of their item.

I have bought from newbie sellers without a problem. However I would use caution with this one. No way to tell if this is actually brass or not.

A $1000 starting bid looks low?

Your point makes sense in general, but not with this offering.

I think perhaps he's building in $5000 worth of insurance in the postal rate. But, I never understand why anyone selling a high-ticket item wouldn't throw in shipping and insurance.
