I was looking through some wheat pennies when I came across this one. I've never seen it or heard of anything like it before so I was hoping that someone could shed some light on this. Thank you

Thanks for the welcome! I just started getting into Numismatics about a month ago looking at spare change and seeing which coins were oldest. Now I'm hooked looking for the prized piece. Shame I had my hopes up on this coin but oh well. I also have another penny 1980 where the 9 looks smeared off, my guess is also post mint damage. ill post a picture soon just in case.

Except yours is jut damage from a deep hit. The original poster's coin was damaged by a Coin Wrapping Machine.
