I went to see the remake of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark this weekend. Yes, this post is related to numismatics and does contain a spoiler below.  |

Spoilers Below!There is a scene in the movie where they find a silver dollar under Sally's pillow. It is shown briefly and it is very worn. Later in the film they are discussing it. Alex, the father, say something "I do not know, it is very worn, maybe 1804 or something." Now, maybe it is my numismatic imagination running wild, but that is what I heard. 1804! Since this was at the cinema, I could not "rewind" and hear it again. If you have seen this, please confirm or deny it!

Haven't seen it yet but I want to. BTW I wouldn't mind dealing with ghosts and ghouls if it meant finding a 1804 Silver Dollar under my pillow.  |

My daughter lost another tooth this week and all she got was three Ikes under her pillow. I usually give her two but this one got knocked out falling off her bike.  I guess ghost give better gifts than the Tooth Fairy. |

When kids are young I think it's better to give them "cool" numismatically interesting coins over something that is just plain valuable. I remember going to the coin shop with my dad and looking at expensive coins, thinking I'd rather have the cool ones that look interesting and really make me want to learn more about them.

A small, but still significant number of my Kennedy half dollars came from the tooth fairy. Speaking of the tooth fairy, here is a little tidbit from Wikipedia... Quote:

I wonder if they said 1804 as a joke for people who actually know coins. My goodness if it really is an 1804, they better preserve that and stop putting it under pillows.

I do not know if I would go that far. I am quite proud of my teeth. To be honest, I can only say this because I know it is very unlikely I would ever have the opportunity. Show me the 1804 Dollar, and I might change my mind. |
